Like the tidal pool at Ballito, snorkeling would probably not be the only reason you find yourself here at the Storms River mouth in Tsitsikamma. The splendour of nature here is quite overwhelming - an ancient rainforest of giant trees surround the mighty Stormsriver as it continues to eat at the chasm it has cut from the rocky Indian Ocean coastline.

Easy snorkel rating:

4/5 (Easy)

2/5 if conditions get a bit rough, which can easily happen here

Underwater visibility rating:

2/5 (OK)

The yellowwood and stinkwood forest tree roots excrete a brownish tint into the Storms River. The river water is therefore often mistakenly thought to be muddy or dirty.

Climate:

Can only snorkel during  summer months when it is warm and dry. Winter months cold and wet (May-September).

Description:

Close to the restaurant, right next to the site where dive shop used to be, a gentle slope runs into the water of the Storms River mouth. A snorkel trail has been laid out that is not too physically taxing. Rocky reefs further out protect the little bay against wave action.

Depth:

0—5 meters

Water heat rating:

3/5 (Mild)
